Schematic Design

Seven Generations provided schematic design services for the Century Building in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Jay Andrew Development Company was awarded a grant by Battle Creek Unlimited to support the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the Century Building, a two-story, cast-in-place concrete building built in the 1920s that had sat vacant in downtown Battle Creek. The developer’s goals for the building included white-boxing commercial space on the first floor and redeveloping the second-floor space into apartments.

Seven Generations Architecture + Engineering (7GAE) developed conceptual designs for the second story, offering a viable layout that featured 16 two-bedroom apartments.

The design also incorporated a new public elevator, fire/egress staircases, a new front façade, and more. A building code review, site plan review, and design strategy analysis were also completed.

The full scope of services included the following:
• Analyzing existing services
• Reviewing electrical panels and service capabilities into the building
• Reviewing plumbing infrastructure and its capacities
• Performing mechanical unit calculations
• Providing commercial space recommendations
• Providing lighting/control recommendations
• Providing egress and emergency exit lighting recommendations

7GAE also provided planning services for the existing first-floor space, which will be utilized for commercial space and designed to offer flexible partitioning for future tenant needs.
