Dowagiac Union Schools passed a Bond Issue in November of 2015 to construct a new competition gymnasium at Union High School. The existing high school opened in 1961, long before the emergence of girls’ athletics. The focus of the design is to equalize the facilities for girls’ sports.
The new 13,500 s.f. gym will accommodate 1200 spectators and provide a 50’x94’ basketball court, with a 30’ clear height for volleyball. Two locker rooms are provided for both boys and girls athletics in the design. The addition is located on the west side of the existing high school. The exterior of the gym will be brick masonry and metal panel walls to complement the existing school. Translucent panels on the north elevation will daylight the gym. A new glass enclosed lobby enhances the prominence of the gym on the corner of the site. Inside the lobby is a concession stand and athletic hall of fame.
